Psychology of Colour - Red

Did you know that others react to our colour choices without us even realising?

Ever since man understood fiery red meant danger and those purple berries were poisonous, colour has been associated with moods and feelings. Over the next few days I will blog about some of the impressions you give when you wear certain colours, and why.

RED

YOU WILL APPEAR: Confident, Extroverted, Risk-taking, Leadership, Passionate, Exciting, Dramatic

Red – is an energetic and vibrant colour which demotes power, confidence, control, motivation love and prosperity. Red suits most people but it is important you consider your skin tone when choosing red. If you have warm undertones then you should go for a yellow based red. If you are cool skin toned, then go for a blue based red.

WHY?

If you want to draw attention, use red. It is often where the eye looks first. Red is the color of energy. It's associated with movement and excitement. People surrounded by red find their heart beating a little faster and often report feeling a bit out of breath. Wearing red clothes will certainly make people notice you! (Some studies show red cars get more tickets but that may be because the red car owners drive faster or the ticket giver notices the movement of the red car more prominently). Red is the symbol of life (red blooded life) and, for this reason, it's the colour worn by brides in China. Red is used at holidays that are about love and giving (red roses, Valentines hearts, Christmas, etc.).

WARNING: Red attracts the most attention over all the other colours but beware - it can make you look heavier. It's not recommended for interviews- you can come across as too domineering.

Go on, try wearing red and watch how it affects others.

P.s. Please note that this is for fun! Don't take what you wear too seriously...wear clothes and colours that make YOU feel GREAT and you will look it too!

Brighten up your Wardrobe

Many women love the idea of adding more colours to their wardrobe but lack the confidence and stick to 'safer’ colours. This is a shame because the right shades can work like magic to: make your eyes sparkle; even out your skintone; enhance your best features and disguise the parts you would rather hide!

In my opinion it's not just about confidence though; it's about knowledge. It is easy once you understand HOW to make colour work for you.

Start Small
If you’re not used to lots of colour don’t dive in head first. Start slowly and build up otherwise you are likely to scare yourself off colours all together.

Accessory Accents
Accessories are such a simple and easy way to add colour to any outfit. Try a fabulous pair of shoes, a bright handbag or statement necklace.

Marvellous Make-up
Find out if you have a warm or cool skintone and invest in the correct make-up to suit.  This will enable you to look radiant whatever colour you are wearing.

Dress in Denim
If you’ve not had your colours analysed and aren’t sure how to mix a colour then pair it with jeans. Most colours and patterns look great with blue denim.

Copycat
One reason celebrities look good (apart from all the airbrushing!) is because they wear colours to suit their complexions. Look in magazines for photos of women who have the same colouring as you and take note of the colours and shades they wear.

Fabulous Fun
Use colour to express your personality and add a new dimension to your look. We have to get dressed every morning so why not make it fun!!

Easy Guide to Body Shapes
Written by Emma

Achieve the body shape you want from the body shape you have!

bs_hourglass

With countless books and programmes dedicated to this topic it can be overwhelming, but the key is not to let it become too complicated. My Mum leafed through a book with 12 different body shapes and didn’t fit exactly into any of them! Why? Because we are all unique and meant to be that way! So let’s keep things simple.  This easy guide is not about labelling but helping you start to identify your basic shape.

Ask yourself these questions:
1) Do you wear a bigger size on top?
2) Do you wear a bigger size on the bottom?
3) Do you wear the same size top and bottom?
4) Do you have a defined waist?

Apple
• You wear a bigger size on the top than on the bottom.
• You have a full bust and carry weight on your tummy.
• You feel you don’t have a defined waist.
• You have comparatively slimmer hips and legs.

 Pear
• You wear a bigger size on the bottom than on the top.
• You carry your weight on your bottom and thighs.
• Your hips may be wider than your shoulders.
• You have a defined waist.

Hourglass
• You wear the same size top and bottom.
• You have a defined waist.
• You may have a full bust and carry weight on your tummy, thighs and arms.

Straight
• You wear the same size top and bottom.
• You don’t feel you have a defined waist.

Inverted Triangle
• Your shoulders are broader than your hips.
• You don’t feel you have a defined waist.
• You have comparatively slimmer hips and legs.

Savvy Sales Shopping

Ever bought a sale item only to find the tag still on it months down the line?

There seem to be never ending sales trying their best to lure us into their shops...BUT don't be tempted by a 'bargain' to find you never wear it or that it doesn't actually go with anything else in your wardrobe. That can be an expensive mistake!

Follow my simple 'Savvy Sales Shopping' tips to avoid frustration and wasted money:

•    Create a list. Have a good sort through your current clothes and make a list of any items you need to complete your wardrobe.

•    Does it go with anything in your wardrobe? If not, please bear in mind you will need to pay out more in order to wear it.

•    Shop in more expensive shops than usual. You will then be getting great quality at an affordable price.

•    Hunt out the true sale bargains, the items to invest in e.g. boots, well-fitting trousers, jeans, coats, cashmere tops.

•    Think classic staples rather than fly away fashion.

•    Think 'price per wear'. In the long run that £10 top you never wear will cost you a lot more than a £110 pair of fabulous jeans you wear every weekend.

Happy hunting!
